Hey Everybody, it’s summer and I’m trying to take it easy. With family vacation, more vacation coming, writing, working and house work…I don’t have much to time to blog. So, just stopping by to say “Hey!”
My latest vacation was intense. It involved deep-sea fishing (with a side of crabbing), beer festivals (bourbon-aged beer…mmmm) and dredging a lake which, as a co-worker pointed out, all sounds like “manly stuff.” I guess it was, I guess it was…
Anyway, I’m back home now and researching (which means reading), writing and thinking about my next fiction piece. I’ve got to focus on that for now and I will be back next time with something a bit more involved for you to chew on.
In the meantime, get out there and enjoy life—it’s way too short! August is a great time to mix it up and have some fun. Who knows? We might even run into one another.
See you soon,
…And I’m back. Just wanted to do a little something before the old blog gets too rickety. Well, I’ve had some good cider, completed a massive road trip from the East coast out to New Mexico (with a pit stop in Memphis!) and now I’m back.
….And I’m feeling a bit like Barton Fink in this scene. A bit worn and stretched thin. After all, we’re entering one of the busiest times of the year.
But here’s the good thing: I’m off this weekend to write. I’ll be working on the 3rd draft of my new story, “The Number Thief.” I’ve been reading through the printouts of the manuscript and the story looks solid: tight plotting, compelling characters (in the two leads, at least) and some great moments along the way. So, it looks like I should have a third draft done in no time…Then it’s onto finalizing it and starting to submit the piece.
Other than that, I have a few other works done and I’m submitting those. No word yet on whether the editors like them, but I’m out there playing the game of submission and rejection.
Alright, that’s all for now. Life—and writing—call. See you next time.
Hey Everybody, time to hang up the fiction and blog writing for a bit and head out for some very late summer vacation.
It’s true. I’m off to the North Woods again for some R&R, so I’ll see you next time here on the blog. I plan to be back Sept. 23 with a new post and some more news on how the writing is going.
Keep Reading, Keep Writing,
PS…And take some vacation yourself, you deserve it!
Taking a little break. It’s the summer and I’m on vacation, so not much time to update the blog. Or write. I’ll do a bigger post when I return on August 14.
Until then, I’ll be wrapping up a draft of my latest short story “P” and resubmitting some stories that I’ve already finished. Just so you know it’s not all vacation.
Will see you all again soon with some more updates on where my writing is going.
Elmore Leonard’s Rules for Writing
To tide you over until I return, here’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: Elmore Leonard’s 10 Rules for Writing. Great stuff here and lots of modern writing seems to follow his rules. His points keep on rolling around in my mind.
Alright, I’m out of here. Till next time…
Hey everybody, I’m going offline for the next week or so. I will be completely out of cell-phone contact and mostly out of Internet contact. Praise be to the Old Gods and Chthonic Muses! That means no posts, Tweets, etc. Things will be quiet and I need that for awhile.
The good news is that the writing is coming along well. Frankly, I’m at a good breaking point. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- “AFTA” – My comedy-horror novella is pretty much wrapped and ready to submit. I just got it back from the proofer and now I just need to review those changes, save it and start submitting it. I have a few smaller publishing houses in mind already, even though it’s a pretty niche genre. If anyone out there has more suggestions, I’d love to hear them. Let me know in the comments section.
- “The Ghul of Yazd” – This damn piece…Oh, wait sorry! Great piece. Love it, actually. It’s just been a challenge finding a home for it. I’m submitting it to markets that accept simultaneous submissions. It’s been at two of the markets for 75 days as of today. I’ve followed up with them and still no response. I guess this is just the life of a writer, but as a guy who has self-published this seems a long wait. (And I know I don’t have the luxury of every having sat on the other side of the table, working through the never-ending slush pile as still more work comes in. I’m sure 75, 90 or even more days would make much more sense from that perspective.)
- “B” – A nice piece on a future in which trope-ly enough, computers have taken over. That being said, I also like the piece. I have presented it to the writing workshop I work with and they think it “has potential.” I’m letting it rest (kinda of similar to the process involving steak) before I re-attack. This will let me flesh out the world-building and the motivations of the characters. Once vacation is over and I’ve got that more sorted out I will move onto the all-important 2nd draft.
So, that means one work is being submitted, the other is about ready to be and a third is being prepped for 2nd draft. It’s not a bad place to be. In fact, it’s perfect for a man looking for a little quite relaxation.
See you all in a couple of weeks. Until then…
Keep reading, keep writing,
We’ll it’s been a very busy year, and I haven’t taken a vacation yet. So, for the next three weeks I’ll be travelling way down south.
That means no writing, no blogging and no Tweeting.
But I’ll be back and ready to go in mid-October. So, look for more posts then. I will have new works in progress to announce and a little snippet on a meeting I had with a new writer. And lots, lots more on the craft of writing fiction.
I hope you’ll join me, I think we both still have a lot to learn.
